How To Cook Five Of The Most Popular Egg Preparations

Americans love eggs – the average American eats almost 300 of them each year. But, cooking them correctly can be tricky.

The easiest way to cook eggs is have someone else do it for you, like the pros at Bob Evans. Ordering eggs the way you want them and having your breakfast delivered is as simple as it gets.

But preparing eggs doesn't have to be intimidating. To help you when you’re in charge of cooking breakfast, we've put together five of the most popular ways to cook eggs*.

Scrambled

For egg novices, scrambling your eggs is the most goof-proof way to prepare them. Crack your eggs into a bowl and whisk them until the whites and the yolks are thoroughly combined. For fluffy eggs, add a teaspoon of milk for every egg in your bowl. Add salt and pepper to taste. Melt a tablespoon of butter in a warm frying pan on medium heat. When the butter is melted, add the eggs. Use a rubber spatula or a wooden spoon to bring the eggs in from the sides of the pan. Continue to pull the liquid eggs from the sides of the pan to the center as the eggs cook. Cook times will vary, but when you see there’s no more liquid in the pan, your eggs are ready. If you like cheesy eggs, add shredded cheese to your pan as your eggs cook.

Pro-Tip: Eggs are notorious for sticking to the bottom of pans. Be sure to use clean, dry pans and grease them up liberally to ensure your eggs come out easily.

Omelets or omlettes are a hearty and satisfying breakfast.

Omelets

Omelets are scrambled eggs — this time with filling. Instead of pushing the uncooked eggs around in your frying pan, let them cook undisturbed. When the eggs have cooked all the way through, add whatever fillings you’d like such as cheese, spinach, bacon, caramelized onions, peppers, mushrooms, more cheese. Be creative! Gently fold your omelet over while still in the pan and carefully slide it onto your plate. For an omelet lower in cholesterol, consider removing the yolks before you mix your eggs for a nutritious egg-white omelet.

Sunnyside up eggs go great with toast and look great too.

Sunny-Side Up

A good sunny-side up egg looks easy enough, but may take some practice to perfect. Melt a tablespoon of butter in a warm frying pan on medium heat. When the butter is melted, reduce the heat to a low flame. Crack an egg into the middle of the pan carefully to ensure an unbroken yolk. Let the egg cook through thoroughly before removing from the heat (about 3 – 4 minutes). Gently slide the fried egg onto your plate. Sunny-side up eggs are great on their own, but we love them on burgers, pizza and of course avocado toast.

Fried eggs, also known as over easy, medium or hard, go great with leftovers

Over-Easy / -Medium / -Hard

Over-easy eggs are just sunny-side up eggs that are fried on both side. The “easy” part means that the yolk is still runny when you cut into it; “medium” means the yolk is slightly runny and “hard” fully cooked through. To get an over-easy egg, start by making a sunny-side up egg. When the whites begin to set (after about 2 – 3 minutes on a low flame), gently flip the egg over and let it cook for another minute. Over-medium eggs should cook for another two minutes, and over-hard eggs should cook for another three. If you have sausage and potatoes left-over from a Farmer’s Choice Family Meal, heat them up in a microwave and add an over-easy on top for a delicious breakfast bowl.

Boiled eggs are simple to learn with the right timing

Boiled Eggs

Just about everyone who makes boiled eggs has their own special tips and tricks to do it the “right way”. If you’re a boiled egg novice, here’s what you need to know. Place your eggs into a pot and fill the pot with water covering the eggs by about an inch or two. Bring the pot to boil; once the water is boiling, reduce the heat and let the water simmer. For soft eggs with runny yolks, let your eggs cook for three minutes. For medium boiled eggs, cook for six minutes. For hard boiled eggs (perfect for Easter eggs), let the eggs cook for about 12 minutes. Once your eggs have cooked to your preferred doneness, pull the pot off the heat and run cold water over your eggs. These eggs are great for salads or a tasty egg salad.
